After more than a century of producing air-filled tires, Goodyear has announced that it is testing airless tires for an autonomous delivery company.
Airless tires are the next big thing in sustainability, as manufacturers try to not only extend the life of their products but also utilize more environmentally friendly materials in the manufacturing process. Last year, we reported on how Michelin, a French tire manufacturer, was progressing with their airless tires, which were set to debut in 2024.
According to another recent news release, Goodyear's approach to gradually increasing the use of sustainable materials in conventional tires is slightly different. Its airless or non-pneumatic tires (NPT), as the business prefers to refer to them, are being independently developed and tested on Starship robots (not to be confused with Elon Musk's Starship).
