Despite the drive by private businesses to launch constellations of their satellites into orbit, communication technology has largely stayed unchanged for more than six decades. Even though communication speeds have greatly increased, a satellite must still send a message to a ground station on Earth in order to speak with another satellite, even if it is just a few miles away. CACI International, situated in Reston, Virginia, is striving to remedy this, and has recently demonstrated inter-satellite communications.
