A day can be spent building a tiny Pod backyard office, art studio, or guest room.

Autonomous, a California-based design studio, has devised an easy-to-assemble building kit that can be set up in the backyard. This 980-square-foot (9.10-square-meter) garden studio, dubbed Pod, can be used as an outdoor office, games room, gym, art studio, or guest room and can be put together in just one day with no prior preparation.

The Pod is a free-standing timber unit that comes pre-wired for plug-and-play convenience and assembles from the box.

“Pod works on any terrain, no concrete surface needed,” says Autonomous. “Its elevated feet can be adjusted to precisely the right custom heights so the pod stays flat and stable, even on slopes and rough ground. Load it up with whatever furnishings you like; Pod is built to evenly distribute up to 4 tons of weight.”

The kit includes six adjustable concrete feet that may change in height to adapt to varied topography or uneven ground, as well as a fuss-free foundation design that doesn't require any initial foundation work.

A timber frame, plywood panels, foam insulation, bitumen, composite wood façade, glass windows, and aluminum/glass sliding doors are among the prefabricated elements that make up the unit. The Pod is designed to endure most weather conditions, including wind, rain, and snow, and is slightly elevated above the ground to protect it from insects, water, and mold while keeping the studio dry.

The Autonomous Pods are also adjustable, with the ability to be disassembled and relocated for re-assembly at a new site as needed, providing flexibility and lifespan.
