While Germany's new administration takes control, several old policies stay in place. Three of Germany's final six nuclear power facilities will close as the world says farewell to 2021.
Nuclear energy has been around for a long time, is scalable, and new developments may even enable us to make better use of radioactive waste. Nuclear energy is seen in the United States as a solution to transition away from carbon-emitting fuels without sacrificing power output or cost. While this was also Germany's approach in the early 2000s, the Fukushima accident in 2011 prompted a significant shift in policy, with parliamentarians led by Merkel deciding to speed up the shutdown of the country's 17 operational nuclear power facilities.
