The National & Regional Awards announcement kicks off the 2022 Sony World Photography Awards with a stunning collection of photographs ranging from daring drone shots to lovely animal portraits to sublime cityscapes.
The Sony World Photography Awards, now in its 15th year, have provided a stunning glimpse of global contemporary photography from over 340,000 image submissions. The greatest single images from 61 countries are featured in this initial wave of award winners.
Each National & Regional Award is chosen from the competition's Open category. The Open category is open to everyone and includes ten different topic areas. More than 170,000 people entered this year's Open competition.
Yih Chang Chew's aerial photo of the Penang Bridge highway is one of the highlights of this year's excellent crop. The image, which won the Malaysian national competition, effectively frames the shot to look like a horizontal Eiffel Tower.
Viktor Einar Vilhelmsson's terrifying photograph of a tiny figure chained to the edge of a cliff watching gigantic glaciers collapse to the ground wins the top prize for Iceland.
