After Russia Reclaims Control Of chernobyl, Radiation Levels In The Area Has Increases.

Russian troops stormed the Chernobyl nuclear power plant site on the first day of their full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and managed to conquer it. Radiation levels at the site have now risen, according to the Associated Press.

After an explosion in Reactor No. 4 at the power plant in 1986, Chernobyl, which was then part of Soviet Russia, became the site of the world's greatest nuclear tragedy. The explosion killed 30 individuals, and the radiation that escaped from the site harmed countless others.

Following the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Chernobyl was taken over by the Ukrainian government, which evacuated over 135,000 people and established a 19-mile (30-kilometer) exclusion zone surrounding the nuclear power plant, according to CNN. Immediately following the disaster, a dome was built above Reactor No. 4 to trap the radioactive waste, and Ukrainian officials have been monitoring it ever since.
